Pssst ... want to buy a fresh durian - is it legal in the US and/or CA?

Someone was looking for fresh durian in the SF area and there was a comment that it was illegal to import the fresh variety.

I don't see anything to REALLY support this on the web except for a reference here and there.

From what I read Whole Foods sells fresh durian. They even had a durian lady giving out free samples at one place. Pretty funny story because when the blogger said ... nah ... won't buy it as long as cherimoyas exist, she got furious about it.

But I digress a little.

Anyway, someone noted that the Whole Foods durian is frozen in transit.

One other mentions that the only way fresh durian will be allowed in the US is if it is irradiated.

I guess they tried to grow it in Hawaii and Florida, but it wasn't too successful from my understanding.

So does anyone know the rules for importing durian? My search skills fail me.

Here's a gratuitous durian link which has a ton of intereting links at the end to other durian sites.
