PRUNE on 1st Street

Maybe I'm just sentimental..but every once in a while, I eat in a restaurant that seems to be everything a restaurant SHOULD be--even in my admittedly jaundiced view. I've had two really fine meals at PRUNE on 1st Street lately. Both were far better than one might feel any right to expect in a place so small and so busy. It's just a terrific joint: Chunky, rustic, skillfully put together food--not shy on flavors--and most importantly, they feature a damn-near note-for-note version of Fergus Henderson's (London's St. John Restaurant) roasted bone marrow with sea salt, parsley salad and croutons (my long time last-meal on earth selection). The chef, staff and crew are a likably tattooed and pierced collection of hooligans--casually dressed--all of them polite, helpful and up-to-speed on both wine list and menu--and it's just the kinda place that smells and feels good. Even the people waiting for tables at the tiny bar look happy
and relaxed.
