Properly storing the Bubbly

I've been storing a nice bottle of champagne in my fridge, thinking dark and constant temperature were good things. Life happens, and before I've realized, it's been in there a year. I guess I have to open it to really see if it has degraded...or is it a sure bet it's gone bad?
