Preserved lemons...a question

Are you supposed to rinse the lemons before using them? I used one of my first batch yesterday and not surprisingly, they were extremely salty. Since I only used a little to flavor some couscous, it wasn't an issue. I just adjusted the salt in the dish as I would with anchovies or any other salty food. I'm concerned when I make a dish that calls for greater quantities, though.
