Finally made it there last night. Got to the restaurant at 8:45 and had an hour wait for a table, but front/bar area was large and made the wait not unpleasant. The fragolini (prosecco and strawberry liquer) didn't hurt either!
When we were finally seated, ordered two quartinos of wine that we both enjoyed--Pinot Nero for him and Tocai for me.
Decided to split 2 apps and 2 entrees. Had the eggplant caponata, which was pleasantly sweet, and the caprese salad. The latter was a winner. There was a bed of roasted red peppers, topped w/a ball of fresh mozarella in a pesto-like sauce. The mozarella was wonderful!
Next split the pane frattau and pepperoni pizza. The pane frattau (percorino and fried egg) was my choice and my favorite--great rich flavor. The meaty flavor that permeated the pepperoni pizza (even the bites w/o sausage) was a bit too much for me. But, both pizzas were very good--nice thin, crispy, but pliable crusts.
Finally, I saved room (he didn't, unfortunately) for gelato. Opted for 3 flavors--olive oil, pistachio, and hazelnut. Olive oil blew the other three flavors out of the water--outstanding. I also enjoyed the pistachio, which was full of nuts. Hazelnut tasted a bit freezer burned to me.
Only unpleasant/strange aspect of the night was the speed of service. We received our apps less than 5 mins after they were ordering. We didn't mind so much b/c we were starving at that point (and the bland, tough bread we were served at the beginning of the meal wasn't going to cut it). Worse was when they served the pizzas less than 10 mins after apps were served. We're both very fasts eaters, but he had to quickly shovel the last bites of the caprese salad onto his plate before they took the salad away and laid down the pizzas. I've never felt so rushed before!
