Post-DAT DAT at South Park Cafe

Nathan Landau | Feb 2, 2003 10:51 AM

Last night South Park Cafe was offering a Dine About Town type meal (3 courses for $29.95) even though the DAT promotion is officially over. I don't know if they plan to continue this or just hadn't ended it. It was a very good meal in almost every respect.

First off, South Park offered almost every dish on the menu is potentially part of the prix fixe dinner. On a couple of the most expensive items they added a $5 surcharge, but it was pretty much run of the menu.

Everything I had was outstanding. I had a smoked beef tongue appetizer which was generously sized and buttery, rather like a tongue pate. There was none of the loose fat or gristle you often find with tongue as a sandwich meat. A perfectly textured ball of Ahi Tuna Tartare was just a touch away from a raw, my wife compared it to a Hawaiian lomi tuna with a different marinade. A glitch here--I didn't want the french fries they brought with the dish and they didn't think to offer me mashed potatos, which came with other dishes (I didn't think to ask). I finished up with espresso ice cream--hard to go wrong there. My wife's dish were good if not quite as superb--a goat cheese appetizer, elegantly arranged rock cod entree, and a pain perdu desert.

The only weak spot was a rather abrupt server. I also wasn't too impressed with my Syrah, which seemed like it had sat around too long. But overall a very good meal and experience.
