I am a huge fan of Spanish wines, but am beginning to tire of some of the ridiculous prices they are commanding. While there are indeed some great wines being produced in Priorato, Ribera del Duero and Rioja these days, I can't see paying $20 - $50 (or much higher) for ones that don't knock my socks off. (Yes, I know about the very nice Spanish reds for $6.99 to $12.99 a bottle, and I load up on those whenever my local shop gets in a few cases.)
What I am wondering is whether any of the Portuguese winemakers have upgraded their viticultural techniques, as Spain has over the last 15 years. I am talking about table wines -- not Ports or Madeiras. Are there any really great Portuguese reds from Douro or any other regions of the country? Are there bargains to be had?
