portugese festival newark ironbound report

what a great neighborhood and festival. lots of action. i encourage everyone to go its a lot of fun.

first i had some grilled ribs from an anonymous stand that were a little gristle-ly but pretty good. nice smoky flavor. cool hardcore note--looking at the bags i noticed the charcoal they used was imported from brazil--and i saw the same bags at several other booths as well. ribs were served w/portuguese bread, tho it was pretty much like wonder bread--and they even added in a couple extra ribs for me.

had some broa cornbread and sumol laranja soda. fine, nothing special. then to get out of the rain i stopped in a couple places for expresso in one and beer in another (ugh! on the latter, see below).

next chow was sarndihas asadas, grilled sardines from the SEABRAS grocery stand. excellent, perfectly grilled and charred. again, i ordered six and they purposely gave me 12--nice, thanks!! washed down with a sagres beer and chewy roll it was perfect.

after enough walking up&down ferry street in the downpour i stopped in SEABRAS on lafayette to shop. i got some compal brand pineapple-mango-lemon nectar & tropicland brand cashew nectar to drink. i also got some rolls 4/99, seabras smoked bacon cubes, smith's brand cafe do brasil expresso beans (1lb/2.79!)and ground brazilian cafe caboclo coffee(8.75oz/99cts!). now i'm set for great breakfasts.

when i left SEABRAS grocery i stopped in BRASILIA GRILL for a caiprinha for the road. tasty, very nice place.

the only downsides of the day were the constant pouring rain, tho it didnt slow down the crowds much, and that someone boosted my jacket (!) earlier when i went to the restroom in some humpy pub--geeez (my rationalization--it was soaked and ripped anyway so i hope you enjoy it sucker). despite these issues i had a great time and hope to be back for another visit real soon, so muito obrigado ate proxima newark!

fyi--its going on sunday too rain or shine.
