Tried Portobello Grill yesterday with another chowhounder and her hubby - it's a nice looking restaurant that is located on the same side as the new Century theatre in downtown Redwood City.
I came in with my son, and there were 3 or 4 tables that will filled - they have a nice looking wooden bar if you are dining solo. The hostess immediately sat me in the corner where I was able to put the stroller without getting into anybody's way.
As I waited for my companions, I perused the drink menu - they have wines by the glass, as well as 1/2 carafes, which is a great option. They have a full bar, and I ended up choosing a mango mojito.
The service is great; they give you water right away and bread as well. The menu has quite a few fish dishes, which pleased my friend. They ended up ordering French Onion soups, which they both said was delicious. I tried the Tuna Tartare Tower, which was pleasant, if a little bland. The tuna tower was made up of tuna in a soy based sauce on fried won ton chips over a bed of greens. I tasted a little wasabi in the soy based sauce, but I'm used to stronger flavors, so I thought it was a little bland.
I ordered the stuffed chicken over mushroom risotto - the stuffed chicken had spinach, and bacon and cheese? Unfortunately, my son took that opportunity to wake up and not want to sit in his car seat, so I only had a few bites of the risotto (delicious) and chicken (crispy on the outside, filling was good too)
My friends ordered the Petrale Sole and the Halibut (with Mango salsa?), and both said it was very good, although the sole could've been a little hotter. I think the sole had mashed potatoes as a side, and I don't remember what the halibut had.
Overall, I think this was a good restaurant - great service, a good mix of different American dishes. I also noted that they offer foie gras as a side for $15 - I think I want to try that. They also have Kobe beef burgers (which I saw a woman in the table next to us have that). I'm not sure when they opened, but they seem to be doing a good job. It's a nicer restaurant option the next time you are in downtown RWC.
I didn't check out the Beard Papa store afterwards though, since I had the baby, but they are down the street, so it's probably a good dessert option after dinner.
Anybody else try this place, with other dishes?
