Portland & Vic: Where Do I Get ...?

Saucyknave | Apr 10, 2002 10:45 AM

In a couple days, I'm leaving to be in Portland a few weeks.

Other than Fore St & Commissary, Portland Mkt, Natural Foods (can't remember name exactly), & the Greengrocer on Commercial, Brown Trading,& Micucci, are there any restaurants, food stores I shouldn't miss?

I do some cooking while there. So, are there any stray special suppliers to check out? Some especially Maine products (like the blueberries later in the summer, lobster of course) that I should try? I'll be going back from time to time through the spring-fall, so don't limit yourself to spring. Where are the best places to get these items. Last time I just happened by a roadside stand selling blueberries, but I'm not sure I could find it again.

Which is the best fish store. I used Brown a couple times and some place on a pier at the other end of Commercial. (underwhelmed, bad luck of the draw perhaps?) Is there any place to get meat, poultry besides the Ptlnd Mkt? Are there any good bakeries other than Katie's (love her Danish) and the one down near Micucci? Are there any local cheese, dairy, etc. producers I shouldn't miss? I thought there was a thread about locally made yogurt (perhaps Vt?), but I couldn't find it among the ton of yogurt entries.

I do get out to eat a little (breakfast & lunch mostly when Fore St seems to be closed). The Biyou, near where I stay is good for breakfast & reading while you eat, but I'd like to try something different.

I have no problem with travelling outside city limits.

Thanks to you all for your responses. If I don't respond promptly, I'm on my way.
