My boyfriend and I eat at The Porridge semi-regularly. Great comfort food when we're in the mood. We went there last night just before closing. I snapped a few photos.
They serve taiwanese rice porridge -- the kind with sweet potatoes added. They will give you unlimited porridge and you order as many side dishes as you wish from a generous selection. They have a dozen or two available from steam trays and another dozen made to order from the hanging menu behind steam table.
We got 6 dishes to share: belt fish, A-choy, periwinkle and basil, smoked tofu, white fish with woodear, and jellyfish with cucumber. On Mondays-Thurs if you order at least $25 they give you free steam dumplings or fried tofu. We choose steamed dumplings.
The belt fish and A-choy are favorites and we always get those. The fish always looks overly desicated, but the skin is usually thin and crispy and the meaty flesh pulls from the bone easily. A-choy is always a big portion and we take the extra home.
The periwinkle was very good, liberal garlic, but could have used a bit more basil. I liked the smoked tofu dish and mostly finished it off; my friend didn't like it as much.
It's always a risk going here right before closing, since some items are a bit stale/dried out at this hour. The fish/woodear, jellyfish, and dumplings were not as fresh as they should be.
Also, although I like pig blood and meat innards, my boyfriend doesn't, and this time we skipped those dishes (which are often quite good). This wasn't the one of the best meals we've had there, but it is probably good to show their variability.
I find the service friendly and efficient: we've never had to wait for a porridge refill (but we don't eat it that fast) and once when I mentioned how I like the sweet potato, they brought me some with extra sweet potato in it. We've never been there when they get extra busy, though. They do have sign up sheet by the door, so there can sometimes be a wait.
Cash only. The meal we had was $45 before tip&tax. They do a loyalty card (one stamp for every $10, earns $10 off). They also have a lunch special, it's around $8 for 3 side dishes.
