FOr my birthday a waitress friend at the restaurant i work (originally from shanghai) made me a special birthday dinner.
Now, I can truly say that I have tasted true chinese cuisine.
among the dishes that were served -- a tofu dish with pork sung and little anchovies atop. There was nothing more beautiful than the contrast between the silky texture of the tofu and the saltiness of the pork sung. The combonation was truky heavenly...and it reaffirmed my belief that simplicity is the key to great food.
we also naturally had the best peking duck --two styles (spicy soup and pancake wrapped)-- i have ever tasted. there is something so satisfying about wrapping up the tender duck with the smoky hoisin sauce, and shredded scallion.
the fresh shrimp chips, pickled and fresh daikon, and shrimp dish were equally memorable.
we also enjoyed something unusual -- it was a sweet a soup with little round dumplings filled with s poppyseed or sesame paste (anyone know the name of this or the tofu dish?!?!)
truly one of the best meals i have had my entire life.
