I've noticed that more locations in the city are closing down and I haven't noticed new ones. I used to live downtown and the one across from Varsity stadium is gone. Then there used to be one near Eglinton and Mount Pleasant and that's gone too. Last week the location near Yonge and Steeles is gone.
I for one have never understood the hype. After living abroad for many years I returned to Canada in my teens and friends would brag in conversation how they were having Swiss chalet for dinner and others in our group would nod in approval.
Naturally I had to see what all the hype was and was sorely disappointed and perturbed. Was my palette so different from growing up overseas? It was basic BBQ Chicken and a bland dipping sauce that so many raved about. This mystery appeal of Swiss Chalet has stayed with me ever since. I have chalked it up as a taste you have to grow up with. My wife says her Dad would take the family there because it was relatively inexpensive and somewhat healthy for fast food. Perhaps Stockholm syndrome is at play here where the hostage starts to identify with the captor etc lol... And people have warm fuzzy memories of going there with their families...and so the positive association is made?
With the GTA population being so dominated by various ethnicities and new immigrants...my theory is that perhaps these new groups are not as strong supporters of this chain as those that have grown up here. I'm interested to know what people's thoughts are on this.
