[Pondicherry, India] French-Tamil Creole Cuisine at Hotel De L'Orient

Hotel De L'Orient in Pondicherry, housed in a French mansion which dates back to the late-1760s, offers the surprisingly hard-to-find French-Tamil Creole cuisine unique to Pondicherry.

We lunched at Carte Blanche, graceful restaurant occupying the open courtyard which formed the centrepice of the mansion.

Beignets de Legumes

Crisp-fried julienned vegetables (carrots, onions, squash) in a peppery-spiced golden batter.

Pakora de Paneer

Spongy-moist Indian paneer cheese dipped in a spicey "gram" flour batter.

Curry de Crevettes, Sauce Menthe & Coriandre

"Patchayi Eral Curry", or Prawns in Mint & Coriander-scented curry. This is one of the recipes reproduced from Dr Lourdes Tirouvanziam-Louise' definitive cookbook, "The Pondicherry Kitchen".

Assorted seafood curry.

Chicken in creamed cashewnut & traditional curry spices.

Creme caramel Noix de Coco

Coconut caramel custard, topped with pomegranate.
