Just wanted to report on a charming Polish restaurant in Forest Hills: "Just Like Mothers" . It's located at 110-60 Queens Blvd. (Ascan Ave. & 73rd St.).
Five of us ate dinner there this week. Part of the fun was our very Polish, not very professional, but utterly delightful waitress.
Some of the highlights: excellent pierogies, particularly the fried ones. Especially strong were the sauerkraut and mushroom, although there were partisans for the farmer cheese pierogies.
Blintzes: seemed to be excellent, although the person who ordered them insisted on the cherry variety (the cherry was like commercial pie filling). They were the size of dosas.
Good mushroom barley soup.
Excellent fried kielbasa.
Indifferent bread and stuffed cabbage.
My two favorite dishes were also the biggest surprises: the sauerkraut and [dilled] boiled potatoes. The sauerkraut was mild but redolent of mustard. I couldn't believe the boiled potatoes didn't have *something* "bad" in them, but the waitress laughed and shook her head, and then, on her own initiative, went back and asked the cook. The cook pleaded innocent.
Our friends indicate that the American-styled breakfasts are also terrific.
Only regret is that they didn't have bigos or rollmops (both on the menu)Tuesday night. No liquor but there is a bodega two doors down and there is no corkage fee for liquor.
