Went to Charleston for the Cooper River Bridge Run this weekend (www.BridgeRun.com) and being local (an hour outside Charleston) knew better than to try and eat or stay downtown. This event brings in hundreds of thousands of people to the city and everything is packed.
So we stayed with friends on Sullivan's Island. Friday night had dinner and drinks at Poes (www.PoesTavern.com). Basically they do chicken sandwiches, burgers all served on freshly made buns, and fish tacos with a few low country items tossed in. The sides are fresh hand cut fries, homemade potato salad, or a marinated bacon-bleu cheese slaw. Full bar.
I had the Annabelle Lee Chicken Sandwich (you can also get this as a burger) which was a Charleston Crabcake (little breading, all crab) with remoulade and the bacon-bleu cheese slaw. OMG I could have eaten it again.
Husband had Buffalo Shrimp tacos. Simply divine.
Girlfriend had Citrus marinated mahi mahi tacos, excellent, her hubby had yellowfin tuna tacos, equally as good.
Her son had the Tell Tale Burger (you can get this as a chicken sandwich) with fried egge, applewood bacon, & cheddar with fries. I was too full to try it but he said it was wonderful.
Lastly, friend had Hop Frog Burger (you can get this as a chicken sandwich) and it had Mig's BBQ sauce, Applewood Bacon & Monterey Jack Cheese with the Bacon-Bleu Cheese slaw.
I can't figure out what it is about Poes. Whether it is the cold beer, the atmosphere, the outstanding food or what but it is one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston. Of course it was packed and we waited a while and stalked a few tables. Seat yourself. For two people, I like to just sit at the bar inside or out. Rarely is it too cold or too hot to sit outside.
After the race. Showered changed and were jonesing for a beer. Knew Jack's didn't serve them but wanted a hotdog anyway.
Jack Hurley, who owns the place, has a long history with restaurants but decided to go back to the basics with this one (www.JacksCosmicDogs.com) and it has been visited and written up by everyone (check out the photo with Jack and Bill Clinton). Anyway, he just brought back the basics; do a hotdog but do the best hotdog and the best sides to go with it and don't make it expensive.
All Boars Head hotdogs except for a few vegetarian/vegan ones.
I had the Morph Slaw Dog (slaw and mustard) with the chilli cheese fries. He makes his own chili and hand cuts the fries. You can get Ne-Hi Grape and Orange Soda in the bottle, Coca-Cola in the bottle and all kinds of other drinks in the glass bottle. They also have fountain soda, malts, milkshakes, sweat tea, unsweat tea, lemonaide, and coolaid.
Everyone else in the party got Atomic Dogs (chili, onions, slaw, and mustard) and regular fries.
We ate until we were sick.
There was a line out the door when we got there and when we left.
It was excellent.
If you haven't made it to these two places go.
The bridge run once again was fantastic and the cheering crowds great.
