Poached in Wine

From time to time I see a recipe for pears (etc.) poached in Sauternes or a late harvest Riesling or some other very $$$-y wine. Is the taste reward equal to the cost? Or are these used for "curb appeal"?

Are there less expensive instances of these wines that one could use in such dishes?
