poached pears

does anyone have a good recipe for poached pears? i made wine poached pears from how to cook everything, which calls for equal parts water and wine, and lots of sugar. i ended up putting in lots of lemon juice to temper the overwhelming sweetness, and the end result was yummy, but still too sweet, and the wine flavor muted/watered down.

so, i can do that again, with less water and less sugar, but i wanted to turn to you to see if you had other tried and true poached pear rec's.
