Plantain Cafe -- 20 W. 38th

May I recommend for your consideration the Plantain Cafe at 20 W. 38th Street, a little bit west of Fifth Avenue . . .

The neighborhood is dispiriting for its lack of chowhoundishness, I think, but this is a welcome addition. Third time there and yet to disappoint.

Caribbean food -- jerk chicken, jerk pork, curry goat, roti, mofongo, etc. My jerk pork today was succulent, and the Cuban style black beans were great -- bay leaf, cumin, all the right flavorings.

I'm going to start stopping there for breakfast; want to try their coffee, of course, plus a sweet arepa and the sugar-and-spice roti. What a good alternative to Au Bon Pain!
