Here's our plans for trip to NO soon

Matt from Michigan | Feb 22, 2005 08:12 PM

First off, I am so glad I found this site – It will make my trip to NOLA in a few weeks that much more enjoyable. This is only my second visit and the last time (10 years ago) the only fine dining we experienced was Alex Patout’s on Royal. I have no idea how we ended up there (and I have never heard it mentioned on this board).I have read a LOT of posts over the last few weeks and have decided (I think) on where I will have my 3 dinners:

Wed (3/23/05): Galatoire’s. This is the complete no-brainer choice for me. Classic New Orleans, simple presentations of seafood in what sounds like a very interesting atmosphere. The place reminds me a little of Joe Muer’s in Detroit (I’m not saying Joe’s was as good!). I plan on having trout or pompano if available.

Question: If we get in line at 6:30 on a Wednesday night, how long for a table (I definitely want to eat downstairs)? I understand you can wait in the bar now, so its no big deal to me. Gotta try my first Sazarec and Pimm’s Cup anyhow.

Thu (3/24/05): Bon Ton Café. This place is close to our hotel (The International House) and I have never read a bad review on this board. I’m hoping for a soft-shell crab entrée. Plus the fact that its not the most expensive place doesn’t hurt.

Fri (3/25/05): I’m torn between NOLA, GW Fins and Mr. B’s. I’m leaning heavily toward Mr. B’s because I want to try the barbecued shrimp. I’ll let anyone try to persuade me otherwise.

We definitely cannot eat 3 big meals a day, so breakfasts will be light (except maybe on Saturday) and lunches will be Acme, Johnny’s Po Boys, Mothers, Napoleon House, Central Grocery or Cameila Grill. We leave Saturday afternoon. I have read that Petunia’s is a good breakfast choice – Any others? Or maybe we’ll just have a big lunch – any suggestions?

I also need ideas for where to go (in or near the Quarter) for good music and atmosphere in the evenings. We’re in our 40’s so please suggest appropriately. Is there a good web site to learn about where to go for music?

Thanks in advance to all who take the time to reply. I love reading the reports by others and I will post mine after our trip.
