help me plan: birthday dinner - app

i am cooking a holiday dinner/birthday dinner for SIL and have settled on Magret de Canard (duck breast) with poached pears in a red wine reduction as the main dish. What would you guys suggest for an appetiser? amuses bouches? I will have a birthday cake for dessert, but i am interested in hearing your suggestions for all the other courses.
