Hi Gang,
I've been living in Tucson now for about 5 months and have managed to dig up most of the good chow.....
But a week ago I came accross this funky old drive in place on Grande...just off of St. Mary's rd.
It's been there since the 50's I think......and it is a TOTAL flashback !
I pulled in and ordered their special.....a chili dog with fries.....
OH MY GOD !!! THOSE FRIES !!!
Has anyone in Tucson been to this place ????
The fries are flat out the BEST I have EVER had !
They are crunchy, tasty.....just a bit greasy but totally addictive.
Can anyone tell me whether they are hand cut or just pre-ordered.... it is hard to tell....
The skins are on....but that could most likely be ordered from any food service company too.
They just taste GREAT ! I love the place but know nothing about it....can anyone fill me in????
Thanks.
Oooo Joule, you're making me long for my Tucson days again! I never made it over to Pat's despite wonderful things said about it, and now I really really want to head over there!
BTW, if you haven't had the fries over at Cafe A La C'Art (the Tucson Museum of Art's restaurant) they are definitely worth a go. Slightly different beast than the Pat's ones (these are ultra-crisp outside, feather-light middles, nicely seasoned and *always* served nice and hot), but are still some of my favorite fries on the planet.
Then there's the one time that they nailed the fries at In-N-Out and they were absolutely unbelievable, but that's a rare occurrence to say the least. Hint- go late at night when nobody else is there.
On my first trip to Tucson a number of years ago a jeep tour guide raved about Pat's chili dogs. Best chili dogs and fries I've ever had. At that time a "family pack" of 4 chili dogs and enough fries for the whole city was $5. I think it's a little more now. We visit Tucson every spring and Pat's is always the choice when we need a quick lunch.
Man Pat's is one of the things I miss most about Tucson. I just googled it to see if they have a website and this website came up. I honestly registered just specifically so that I could add my own two cents about Pat's. I have a family link to the restaurant actually. My mom's uncle owns it, so we used to go there a lot. I'm pretty sure the fries are hand cut, just to answer your question. But I was a kid back then so I don't know for sure. As a kid I wasn't much into the chili dogs, but I always used to order the fish sandwich, and of course the fries are amazing, Good memories.
Hey Joule,
Oh yes, Pat's has been there forever and hasn't changed in the least, except back in the day, there was no incloser to eat in. None-the-less Pat's has alway's been the best and their fries are definately hand cut with the peels and all. I agree with you in that they are the best. I grew up in Hollywood (the nieghborhood that Pat's borders) and I knew a lot of the guys that worked there at one time or another, plus it was the place to get a quick and delicious bite. Love the extra spicy chili dogs and the Big Pat Chili Cheese Burger...Yum!
Anyway's, hope this gives you an idea of the long tradition that is Pat's.
Pats is one of Tucsons real gems there. I've been eating at Pats since I was 5 or 6, and even now, I always go back to Pats whenever I visit my home town. The fries are definitely hand made: If you look to the right, just past the soda machines, on the back wall, I believe you will still see the lever operated french fry slicers.
Two problems with the fries, both to-go related:
1) If you have anyone else in the car with your while you're taking them home, they will probably mysteriously disappear. Be careful or you may not get any.
2) Once they cool down, they congeal... eat them while they're hot!
