In the mid-80s my buddies and I would drive out from UMass to go to Sox games, the odd show (remember the Rat?) and even wrestling at the Garden. We would always go for pizza in the North End. Live in California now, have been back a few times, miss some stuff.
First, when did Regina stop listing extra oil as a menu item? Pouring it on is almost the same, but not quite. Should be running down your arm!
Second, I know it's been gone a long time, but man I miss the European. My favorite pizza, remember the ground salami (or maybe pepperoni, but I think it was salami) they used to put on the top to crisp up? Only pizza joint I've ever been to that had a maitre d'. Dude would only speak to the men in the party, even if the women went in first and tried to get his attention. You'd walk through the restaurant to that big room in the back, sit down and get a big ol' rectangular pie. That was really good pizza.
Lastly, there was a place off the main drag called Giorgio's. Into simplicity, their special came with just pepperoni and peppers. Good good pizza though.
Was back a year or two ago and the upscale-ed-ness of it all made me sad. I think even the candy store, where you could buy good dried porcini mushrooms for some reason, was gone.
Thanks for reading, love to hear your memories of the above joints or others that are gone.
