Pizza dough virgin needs help!

So I broke down and bought fresh dough for the first time. Why I'm nervous about it I don't know but I really want to get it right. In terms of foreplay, should I let the dough come to room temperature before I knead and stretch it? Is there anything else I need to do to it first to get it ready? I have both a stone and a metal pizza pan. Will one enhance the experience more than the other? I've got fresh mozzarella, sauce, mushrooms and good Italian sausage for the toppings to dress it up. What else do I need to know for a truly memorable evening with my first pie?
