Pizaro's: Naples Style Pizza in West Houston

We have been waiting patiently for this place to open, and come to find out, so has the owner, but maybe not so patiently after dealing with city codes and permits that were not meant to address a wood fired oven in Houston. The family shipped in a state of the art wood fired oven from Naples, and plopped it in right next door to the Los Tios, in the same shopping center as Anne's Fine Gifts and Honeybaked Hams at Memorial Drive and Kirkwood. The temp in the fancy oven gets to 900 degrees with the oak wood, and pizzas bake in 90 seconds, so they say.

Months and months after they hung their sign, they opened, and we visited today, just 9 days or so after opening. They serve pizza and salad, that's it. Well, fountain drinks as well, including a tea urn that magically produces 4 kinds of tea, depending on which button you push. BYOB wine and beer. Order at the counter (although there is a hopeful hostess stand near the door), move to the drink station and pick up your seasonings and plastic ware, proceed to any table you wish, and await your pick-up at the "pick-up" station. Except that today, at least, a pleasant young lady delivered us our food.

Since we were nearly swooning with hunger upon arrival, we ordered salads, one caesar and one house vinaigrette, then my better half ordered his standard Margherita (by which he judges every pizza place) and I ordered the pizza with the most toppings, the "Campania": tomato sauce, roasted crimini mushrooms, artichokes, proscuitto, black olives and mozzarella (but they also threw on basil leaves), and added truffle oil for an extra $2 (PICTURE ONE). It's Christmas, don't ya know?? Live a little! These are 12 inch pizzas, you each get your own. Merry Christmas.

The owner guy came around talking to folks during our meal and told us he makes his mozzarella fresh every day, as well as the pizza dough. His co-owner wife is there also and their son too.

Here's the thing: it was outstanding.

The mozzarella was so incredibly fresh and tasty, I do love cheese! You can upgrade your mozzarella to imported buffalo mozzarella for a upcharge. It's Italian, of course. Owner brought us a sample of that cheese and it was creamy and rich (PICTURE TWO).

Points off for way over dressing the salads, but that was not the focus and easily fixed. Fix it!

Most depressing moment came when we saw cars of folks parking in front and ambulating down to the dreaded Los Tios! Stop that madness! Los Tios is not food!! 30 years I've been saying that, to no avail.
