Pinole - The Flying Cow - Don't miss the outstanding pastry

... perhaps the best I've had in the Bay Area and that includes La Farine, Masse's, and my new interest DeLessio. It makes Bay Breads pastries look leaden.

The apricot puff pastry I had was what this should be. A puff pastry so light it defined gravity holding a warm cream cheese filling with the heady aroma of vanilla topped by two plump apricots.

Don't miss it because, unfortunately, the owner is retiring and selling the Bakery. There are only a few items baked each day like a pastry or two and some scones.

I went in for the coffee (uncommon beans) with no intention buying pastry. Just wanted to see what was going on. I almost didn't go in. Even with the open sign it always looks desserted. HOWEVER, I have stepped inside almost every other restaurant in Pinole, so I walked up to the door and pushed it open (wasn't sure if it really was open).

I guess at one time they did sandwiches and cakes. I asked if they did cakes on special order. Nope. Owner is just tired of the business. Too bad. Wonderful stuff.

So stop by if you have a chance. Hours are erratic. Located in the Albertson Plaza which I hears is about to be renovated.
