When and where to go for pinenuts in New Mexico?

alfredck | Apr 8, 201602:12 PM     1

After years of thinking about it, my wife and I are planning to visit New Mexico in the fall. I would like to visit during pine nut season. When and where can they be purchased? Retail stores, flea markets, cars on the side of the road? Are they only sold in the shell, or are peeled nuts available for lazy people like me?

Also, any tips on obscure local specialities (such as the best place for achii) are very much appreciated. We have an interest in Native American foodways, so tips on Navajo food (I've read lots of mutton without much seasoning) would be great.

We may visit Gallup, Shiprock, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, and Albuquerque (can't help but think about Pollos Hermanos).

Thanks in advance.
