piggin' out at Aguililla Market

Three of us stopped by for lunch yesterday just after the lunch hour. It was pretty calm and the counter help was very helpful in answering questions and even offering a sample of chiccarone (sp?) when one of us was looking longingly. We all decided on carnitas but in different incarnattions: one torta, one burrito and a tostada. The carnitas was sitting on the steam table in various size chunks - also in the pan were large pieces of skin that had been cooked along with the meat. Remembering what one prior hound had said about folks who ordered carnitas asking for some of the skin to be chopped in - I asked for the same. Cardiologist stop reading right now..... he picked up a piece of the skin that was the size of a 10 inch plate and rough chopped it into 1 inch pieces and combined it with the large pile of carnitas for my torta.
Meanwhile the bread and tortillas for our three orders were crisping up on the flat top. The carnitas was moist and tasty but lacked the crispy/charred bits that I so adore in carnitas. My torta ($4.75)consisted of a large pile of carnitas/chicharrone, refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream & guacamole. It was as good as it sounds. The burrito came with rice, beans, onions, cilantro & salsa - plus a large pile of carnitas/chiccharrone. It was impressively large at $4.75. The tostada came on a corn tortilla so it wasn't as huge as some I've seen but with the ample portion of meat topped with beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream & guacamole it was very satisfying.
We also tried the flan - it had a very good caramel flavor but the custard was overcooked for our taste. There is a fair amount of seating and a sink available for washing your hands after wrestling with a messy sandwich or burrito. Mexican tunes are playing in the background. There are a good selection of beverages here ....juices, shakes & smoothies. agua frescas and a full cooler case of cold drinks (including Squirt, Jarritos, Jumex nectars, etc....)They are adapting and now offer some very contemporary choices....shakes with chai tea, spirulina, protein powder....and a juice drink called chupacabras: that is a combination of beet, carrot & orange. There's a lot on the menu - I look forward to returning.
