pie in winter?

bjt | Jan 21, 200310:12 PM

I know I should have asked this in late summer or early fall, but nevertheless, the winter doldrums are really kicking in and I want to know if anyone has suggestions for places that serve pie that reminds them of what mom used to make (mine never did but I like to latch on to the sentiment) or that has mindblowing crust or whatever. . . I am mostly interested in fruit pies but I mean "real fruit" not the gelatinous gooey globby stuff/pie filling in cans--although at this time of year I certainly understand that folks are working with frozen fruits. I'd say berry pies are my favorite (served a la mode with vanilla ice cream) with apple and rhubarb following, but if it's sweet and under a crust, I really will try anything once. That said I also love a stellar pecan pie and do love the sweet potato pie that I've sampled at a few street fairs (and once saw young men selling at 95th off the Dan Ryan but wasn't able to buy one). Finally, is it a midwestern thing to eat cheddar cheese on/with your apple pie (my mother grew up in Indiana and this is how she has always enjoyed hers) and do any restaurants around Chicago serve their pie as such?

Thanks in advance . . .
