pie crust -- to prebake or not to prebake?

I'm making the pumpkin and pecan pies this year for the big day on Thursday -- I'm thinking of trying some different recipes this year and I've noticed that some call for the pie shell to be baked before hand and some just call for it to go in the freezer for a short time. can some one explain what the difference is and what they do?
