New Pickle Place on Essex

An interesting pickle story is in the works here: A new store has just opened up on Essex St. between Grand and Hester, right near the old location of Gus's. "The Pickle Guys" is run by Allen who made pickles at Gus's for 20 years. He's hired back many of the old employees of the original Gus's too. We picked up a quart of half-sours last night. They're really delicious, though a bit milder than I expected, almost like new pickles. (To be fair, the guy working there told me they weren't quite done and to leave them out over night to finish the pickling.) They also sell sauerkraut, tomatoes, mushrooms and the rest. There's probably more to the story, since Gus is still in business around the corner on Orchard. But the Pickle Guys seem serious and it's nice to have a pickle business back on Essex. More on this as the story unfolds. Meanwhile, come down and grab a pickle. We're curious to know what the board thinks.
