I heard about Udupi here a while ago and finally tried it last night. I didn't remember or just didn't know that it was vegetarian, but that's not a huge deal. If you're not a vegetarian and you're faced with eating vegetarian then you can hardly do better than Indian. They've been doing it for a long time and I think they've got it down. ;) However, the lack of beer and wine is a bigger issue for me. Drat.
Udupi is Southern Indian cuisine, which meant that I didn't recognize much and had to read all the descriptions on the menu. I ended up ordering the sampler appetizer platter, a sour/spicy soup, the huge Thali combo entree for me, and Cheese Dosai for my wife.
All of the appetizers were pretty tasty, though there was something like a big potsticker that wasn't all that good. They came with a good selection of condiments, plus soup (oops).
We'd just gotten a good start on the appetizers when our entrees arrived. I hate that.
My Thali entree came as a large assortment of small dishes, plus a small plate of appetizers (oops), plus more soup (oops). The chick pea stuff was really good, as were the potatos. The rest of it was pretty good as well.
The Cheese Dosai is a crepe-like thing filled with, er, cheese. Also onions and other goodies. I liked the flavor, and my wife liked it too.
Not knowing the portions, we ordered WAY too much food, and little dishes of soups were everywhere. Though the entrees are pretty cheap ($6.50+), they are quite generous.
