So I finally had a chance to visit Phoenix Dumpling House. After a week in Tampa (where most Chinese places advertised "New York style" Chinese food, whatever that means), I was craving real Chinese food.
We went in about noon on a Monday, and the place was pretty much empty. Ordered the Xiao Lung Bao, Hong Kong Wonton soup, some dim sum, etc.
Unbelievable Xiao Lung Bao... Even better than the ones I had in Shanghai. Just the right balance of ginger and juices... With some extra ginger and vinegar, we were fighting over the last one.
The wonton soup was good.. but not as good as some other places... I'm afraid I am a wonton snob, given that I grew up in Hong Kong.
We went back again that weekend, and it was packed. The Xiao Lung Bao was not as good either... They were bigger, and stuck together at the sides, so the wrapper kept breaking in the container...
When we went back the second time, I ordered a "nian gao" dish, Shanghai stir fried nian gao. Fragrant with sesame oil, the rice cakes were perfectly done, with bits of shrimp, cabbage, onion and pork.
I would suggest going back there when there is less of a crowd.
