Last month they moved from their Broadview location south of Gerrard to its new address 613-615 Gerrard Street East (just east of Broadview) in the same area. I sincerely hope they do well in this location because establishments do not seem to fair well in terms of longevity as a business. It used to be the New Grand Restaurant and had several other names afterwards when it was still a restaurant.
Anyway, it is now a spacious bakery with several tables to eat your purchased orders. It occupies about half the space the restaurant used to take up. Its layout reminds me a bit of the Furama Bakery on 248 Spadina Avenue in Chinatown. The size is about same, but Phoenix Bakery may actually be bigger.
Personally, I'd recommend this place because it is open very early. From 7:30am to 10:30am you can even get hot congee at this bakery for its large size container for only $2.00. They have different sizes and all. Yesterday, I had the salted donut priced at $0.80 with my large preserved egg and pork congee. My total came to $2.80. Where else in the city can you eat congee with a dough fritter for only $2.80. I'll definitely be returning to this place more often for my breakfast. :)
