i have been going to pho pasteur occasionally for the past 20 odd years, on and off.
it was okay, and definitely not the best. however, the morning of aug 8, 2016, 10am, will be my last visit to this now horrible restaurant.
i ordered a medium sized bowl of pho, beef shoulder with tripe.
the service: after i put my order in, it only took a few minutes. the server brought my condiment plate and bowl of soup together. usually the condiments are delivered first, then the soup.
what i got:
the condiments: the basil and sawtooth corriander are old, and of poor quality. the bean sprouts are quite old, and yellow beige in color. fresh bean sprouts are white when fresh.
the soup: the broth was quite murky. the broth was also EXTRA oily, and its temperature was lukewarm. i am pretty sure that my bowl of soup was takened from the bottom of a pot of old soup; it was that bad. compare the broth to something like lake ontario water, abit darker and more opaque though...
they should have not served me the soup at all.
the beef shoulder and tripe were okay. but what really disgusted me was the quality of the broth: it was bad. if i could post the rating WITHOUT A SINGLE STAR, i would have preferred that. pho pasteur does not deserve 1 star at all for what they served me.
there are some very good pho restaurants in toronto. here is my short list:
- Golden Turtle, Rua Vang, 125 Ossington Street, Toronto (one of the best in the city), it is north vietnamese style broth, near-clear in character
- Pho Huong Truong, 3370 Keele Street, Toronto
if you have to have pho and are in the dundas-spadina area, AVOID pho pasteur. you will be having a MEDIOCRE meal. avoid wasting your time and money on this poor quality restaurant. being a 24/7 restaurant does not guarantee great food... it just guarantees something to eat any time of the day ... in this case, something not that great to eat, any time of the day. ugh......
