Pho Palace in San Lorenzo (the only Vietnamese place in San Lorenzo?)

Wendy Lai | Dec 13, 200106:49 PM

As far as my co-workers and I know, Pho Palace is the only place that serves Vietnamese cuisine in San Lorenzo. This does not give us much choice, but luckily for us, Pho Palace is good.

I've been there a few times now. Of their entire menu, I've only tried a small portion: pho, seafood noodle soup, five spice bbq chicken over vermicelli, cold shrimp rolls, and their wonton egg noodle soup.

The pho is not as flavorful as some Vietnamese in downtown Oakland, but on a cold rainy day, a bowl of it is still satisfying. The broth is not greasy, the flavoring is on the light side, but definitely has the distinct pho "taste", it is served up with a fresh plate of sprouts, basils and lemon wedges.

The shrimp roll is somewhat lacking. There are too much noodle inside the roll, also not enough mint or other Vietnamese herbs are used. The dipping sauce is a little weird, not really the usual peanut sauce but some brown sweet sauce.

I want to highlight the wonton egg noodle soup. It's one of the best bowl of noodle soup I've ever had. The noodles are slightly chewy, very distinct of egg noodle, it goes perfect with the soft and meaty wontons. The broth is something between chicken and port I think, I can't tell, but it's good. Two slices of roast pork garnish the bowl, just like Raman noodles. I've ordered it twice in a roll now and found it to be just yummy!

Everything else that I've had there was all very "not-bad" I suppose being the only Vietnamese place in San Lorenzo gives it certain advantages. I am willing to over look a few things in exchange for some good noodle soup.

Oh and their prices are not bad either, small pho is $4.95 while large is $5.95.

They also serve a wide variety of pearl drinks.
