Pho Ga at Ba Vo in Oakland

susancinsf | Apr 13, 2005 01:37 AM

I've seen posts on Ba Vo, at 13th and Broadway, but hadn't been...until today, when I had a meeting at the Marriott and was further downtown than my normal lunchtime haunts to the north...

anyway, just wanted to mention that, if the Pho Ga is any indication, I consider this spot a better option than either Hyuhn (thanks to the much better service, and an infinitely quieter room, even at high noon), or than its sister restaurant Pho 84 (which, like Ba Vo has good service, but which is much more crowded and also much more noisy). It might be a tad more expensive than either of those options, but a much more pleasant experience.

I had an iced coffee and the Pho Ga. Obviously, would have to try more of the menu to really judge, but the Pho Ga was great: large chunks of shredded and still juicy chicken with very good flavor to the broth (which does have beef in it according to the menu); tasty noodles; jalapenos, bean sprouts and basil served on the side. I got the regular size at $6.95 and barely finished it: for a $1.50 more they offer a 'large' size that would be too much for me. I had the Pho Ga at Binh Minh Quan a few weeks ago and I would actually give the edge for this particular dish to Ba Vo for the amount and quality of the chicken, and for a more flavorable broth. (Though BMQ is less expensive).

Any experiences with the rest of the menu?
