Well, I've finally found a food I don't like. Okay, it may not really be considered a food, more of a body part, but I like most body parts internal and external. You see, I have a bad knee. My tendons grate and grind all over the bone and muscle if they are stiff. The tendon in my pho today was exactly that same texture. Things that make you go hmm...
Pho 99 in Orange:
Ambieance is good and kind of updated. Very chain like and since they are one, I guess it should be so.
Service is always prompt, my water glass wasn't near empty even though I just got off of a road ride and was sucking it down quickly. This is good.
I had spring rolls and the multi beef pho (#1 Pho for those keeping score at home). The spring rolls hit my table before I could even break open my newspaper. They were well prepared and ingredients were fresh, but it was wholy lacking in flavor. The peanut dipping sauce was dark and rich, but not spicy (which we fixed promptly with enough chili oil to hurt my children's children).
The pho came and as usual, the broth was amazing. However, the one thing I don't like about Pho 99 is the skimpy vegi's they give you to add to your soup. All you get are bean sprouts, a sliced jalepeno, lime and basil, but I go to Pho 99 because their broth never disappoints. Maybe next time I'll sneak in a load from the farmer's market.
The beef was... beef like. Chewy and beefy (is that a word?). The noodles were over done today (they tore with the slighest touch of the chopsticks) and the combo #1 completely disappointing. Wah. I gave up eating beefy combo #1 after about half of a bowl.
I've had the seafood pho's and they are usually much better.
.and then there was the beef tendon.
