Pho, No!!

Not to belabor the point(s) of the recent thread bemoaning the lack of high quality Vietnamese eats in these parts, but...

Took a mid-week jaunt to Pho Bac--it was basically a coin flip between that and the branch of Joe's next door--and came away deeply, deeply disappointed, not just in the food, but the whole "experience."

The three of us ordered appetizers and dinner, most of which was pretty blah. the shrimp paste on sugar cane, which is usually nice here, tasted reheated and old, with the two elements seemingly introduced to each other about 30 seconds before plating. a chicken dish (one i didn't really sample much of, so don't remember which) was likewise dull, and served at room temperature.

to add insult to injury, we never received the last round of beer that we ordered, and when we pointed this out (politely) to the waiter, he bristled and insisted "i put them right there and opened them!" he then sent over the owner, who, in keeping with custom, toed the "customer is always wrong" line and insisted we pay for them.

as we didn't have much of a choice in the matter, we did pay--and deducted the money stolen from us from the waiter's tip.

add this one to the "never again" list....
