Pho So 1, ba le cafe and no bakery? Dorchester

Pho So 1- we ordered take out. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many things on the menu that are not served at most of the Viet places we have been to in the boston area. I ordered grilled pork pork with pasted shrimp and my husband ordered shredded pork with grilled shrimp. Probably the best viet rice dishes we have had in the boston area. We defintely have to go again and sit down.

Ba le bakery and cafe- a few doors down from pho so 1. Great place! We ordered 2 banh mi vietnamese ham and shredded bbq pork. Both were great (and cheap 2.25). We picked up a bunch of desserts tapioca w/ sweet potato, tapioca w/ green seaweed stuff in it, viet flan, green bean dofu, coffee flavored dofu and not really a dessert rice w/ mung bean and duck in a leaf. All of them were great and reminded me of home cooking. I hadn't seen a lot of the dessert offerings at other places in the area. It was a great find!

bakery? I popped into a few other places that said they were bakeries but turned out to be banh mi. Specifically I am looking for casava or durian cake (more like a very dense bread), banana bread (actually made with plantains) a very heavy moist bread made with a thick layer of plantains, burnt sugar custard a very dense sweetdark custard cut into bars. The viet bakeries in toronto had these items but I can't find them anywhere in the boston area.

Thank you for the recs! We didn't know there was such a large Viet community in Dorchester! My husband was so happy to have some good viet food. There was plenty of onstreet parking and the red line stops right in the heart of the Viet area.
