Hurricane Dennis ran us out of Florida last weekend, and we hit Eufaula just at lunch time.
We'd seen the billboards advertising Phil's ("Best Butts in Alabama") many times, but never stopped there. Decided to give it a try.
Excellent 'cue. Not quite up to the standards of Macon Road Barbecue in Columbus, Ga., which for my money is the best in the world, but not too far behind, either. Definitely in the top 10 percent of the 'cue pits I've tried, and I've tried a lot of them. It's waaaay better than either of the better-known places I've tried an hour down the road in Dothan: Dobbs (whick I would rate somewhere between mediocre and OK) and Larry's (awful).
Phil's pork was very lean and nicely smoked, with a choice of three sauces -- one sweet (yuk), one a thin mixture of mustard and vinegar (didn't do much for me) and one which they describe as simply as "mild," but which is actually moderately hot, a typical West Georgia-East Alabama sauce, spicy and tasty.
This is an excellent stop for anyone traveling between the Florida panhandle and North Georgia or Eastern N. Alabama and points beyond.
It's just south of downtown, a block east of the highway but hard to miss. Whether you're traveling north or south, the turn is marked by a large billboard on the east side of the road stating, "Turn Here." I'll turn again the next time I'm passing that way at mealtime.
