Pet Peeve: Green Onions = Chives???

JoHn | Mar 30, 2001 11:30 AM

Here's a little intresting thing that happened to me at a not-to-be-named chain steakhouse with and Australian theme.

I went to the place for dinner with a few friends and had a baked potato with my steak. For some reason, my friends got bacon, cheese and "chives" with their potato.

Well I, too, wanted some "chives" but asked for green onions. The server got huffy and she told me that those aren't green onions, those are chives and I meant "chives". Being a little slow after a couple drinks, it didn't register for me to just say, "yes". I looked around and didn't see chives on any plates (and my little mind was getting confused) and proceeded to explain that those are green onions and that chives are totally different. She proceeded to reiterate that those were chives. Finally, I said all I want is some of that green stuff, pointing at my friends baked potato. The waiter came by, she told him that I wanted green onions which are actually chives, but I keep calling them green onions. She was talking really fast and agitated so I missed her exact comment.

I know this isn't a big deal and it usually isn't. I wasn't trying to be a pain in the butt.

I guess it's a pet peeve when you go to a restaurant and they give you green onion for chives or margarine for butter and still insist it's the real deal. Where's the truth in advertising?

Just a little rant.
Anyone else?
