Peruvian Chichen in Highlandtown!

Around 9:30pm Sunday night, we stopped by Chicken Rico, the Peruvian style chicken joint at 3728 Eastern Ave. Learned that it's been open about a month...and it's open until 10pm every night, so they were cleaning up, not the greatest time to be at any restaruant.

Anyway, the chicken was very good. I don't know Peruvian food at all, so had nothing to compare it to. It didn't quite come close to some of the chicken I've had in the Salvadoran places on Upper Bdwy, but the spices were great, however, the the chicken was a wee bit drier than I'd like. But all in all, better than most chicken I've had.

But, the sides! The sides were great. We got rice, beans, yucca, and plantains. The beans were perfectly seasoned, and I've never, ever had such good yucca. Fried with no grease, with the inside light and fluffy. Definitely worth breaking any low carb pledge for. The plantains were the sweet ones, and lightly fried, and served in little oval slivers.

The portions were huge. We split a half chicken, and it was probably enough for 4 with all the sides. With beverages (they have a Peruvian sodas, but we stuck with more familiar liquid) it came to about $11 or $12 bucks.

I'm so happy the ethnic choices in Charm City are expanding. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.
