Persica Ice Cream

PayOrPlay | Aug 25, 2004 12:52 AM

This is another ultra-high-end local ice cream brand that has started popping up at Bristol Farms and Gelsons. I gather from their website that it has been available for a while at Wholesome Choice in Irvine. It comes packaged in 1.6 pint metal cans (attractive but in my opinion impractical, because it's almost painful to handle these cans when they come out of the freezer) and the flavors are for the most part Persian favorites--saffron pistachio, vanilla saffron, orange blossom, pomegranate, coffee, chocolate. $7.99 per can, which makes it a bit cheaper per ounce than Gelson's current price for Dr. Bob's.

When I saw a single can of the pomegranate ice cream at Gelson's tonight I could not resist trying it (especially because Mashti Malone's still hadn't brought back their phenomenal pomegranate sorbet as of our last visit a few weeks ago). At first I thought it was a bit icy, but after a few spoonfulls the texture really began to grow on me--it is obviously rich (300 calories & 17g fat per 4.5 oz serving) but rather light at the same time. Ultimately we thought it was quite nice.

Opinions? Has anyone tried the other flavors? And in particular does anyone have opinions on how the Persian flavors compare to Mashti?
