It's that time of year when fresh tomatoes are taking over every kitchen in the country (except mine, because I live in S. FL. and we just can't grow a good one--too hot, nematodes, whatever..). I've lately
had a yearning for the supreme summer food of my Virginia youth...the tomato sandwich. Not just any tomato sandwich, either, but the 1 1/2" center cut of a monster 3lb. Beefsteak, sun-warmed and straight from the back yard on bakery white bread w/Miracle Whip and a dash of salt and pepper. Was there ever anything so perfect?
