About a month ago I posted asking for a place in the MIddle Village/Rego Park area that had the kind of pizza I grew up with---chewy, foldable crust, "greasy" cheese, and tangy tomatoey sauce with just the right amount of spice. The replies to that post weren't hopeful. Last week I was in the area, visiting my parents (I live in the Midwest now where that style of pizza doesn't exist). I'm happy to report that we found EXACTLY what I was looking for---at Leone's on Cooper Avenue in Glendale. It's just blocks from the Atlas shopping mall they're building. The place has been there for years, and I remember the pizza being acceptable, but not great. It's been at least 2 years since I've been there. I'm not sure if it's changed hands, or we just got lucky, but last week I had pizza and other dishes (which were OK) there with my husband and parents. The pizza was OUTSTANDING. They've also made the place more eat-in friendly since my last visit---beautiful (really!) new bathrooms, a cleaned-up dining area, and even a waitress! Our only complaint about the eat-in experience is that it was VERY cold in the dining area. So, bring a warm coat if you plan on having this great pizza here!
