Got out of a meeting at the end of lunch hour near Olympic and Sawtelle and decided to walk up Sawtelle for a quick lunch. I remembered a post from a couple of days ago recommending lunch at 2117 in the strip mall on the west side of the street. Dropped in and got seated on the enlcosed patio out front. Given the gloomy day,I was in the mood for something hearty and settled on one of the specials of the day -- Braised Wild Boar Rib in "Braise [sic]tomato Sauce." It was absolutely terrifc. Fork tender and moist, like a perfectly cooked pot roast, eight short, but fairly thick slices of boned rib meat sat in a sauce that seemed more like slightly thickened, rich broth. The sauce had a just a hint of hoisin or char schiu flavor in the background, but not over-powering. Perfectly balanced. The meat was flavorful, deep without being too gamey, and not too rich. It came with a few perfectly crisp sauteed pea pods and green beans along with a dollop of mashed potato that soaked up the sauce nicely. (I actually ended up emptying the bread basket sopping up the sauce.)
Just an excellent, well executed dish, and a deal to boot -- $14.95. (For $17.00 you can get it prix fixe with soup or salad and dessert.)There were plenty of other interesting things on the menu, so I'll definitely be back. My thanks to DB who I now see was the poster who suggested 2117 for lunch.
