The Perfect Au Jus French Dip Sandwich Proves Elusive

We headed to Harry's Hof Brau on Mission in San Leandro last night, searching for the perfect au jus french dip sandwich.

This place was absolutely packed. You order cafeteria style and the line snaked past the Disneyland-like/airport line holders towards the back door. People were in a great mood, though, and must have been regulars because they were prepared for the wait.

The line staff were friendly and efficient. I ordered my french dip sandwich with extra jus on the side (around $6.00 for the sandwich). The meat looked great--medium rare; the bread--a sour dough french roll also looked like it could stand up to some serious dunking.

And, the meat was great--tender; flavorful; not at all tough. The roll,too--although not as crusty as I like--was up to the job of sopping up the beef juice.

But, the juice. Sigh. I think it might have been canned. Of course, that didn't stop me from consuming the entire sandwich, but I was disappointed.

Two out of three?

BTW, my daughter had the turkey dinner and the meat and veggies were great, but the gravy was not very flavorful. Steph had the polish sausage--not a good choice.

For those interested, a full bar is located in the back of the building.
