I just had a double cheeseburger/fries combo at this South Loop institution, and I will again throw Pepper's into the ring as one of Chicago's finest burger joints. I do this because Pepper's does not exist in Cyberspace or the media (just look for it), but is a real Chowhound kind of place. For those who like "1930's Style" burgers, this place has 1930's-style food served from a 1930's kitchen on 1930's Formica over a 1930's Linoleum floor. These people (who I think are Korean, which makes sense)understand the dynamic between open flames and fatty beef. For $4.25, I just had supper and a show -- viz, a pyrotechnics display during which my patties ignited, spewing tallow-powered rocket flames high into the dusky diner air. Anyway, those who complain abot Loop dining don't spend enough time under the el tracks. And those who love the Twisted Spoke should know that it is a Disneyfied version of Cal's-- the grungy biker/trader bar next door to Pepper's where you can relax with a PBR and a Pepper's burger delivered through a hole in the wall. And the fries are terrific, too. Dessert options include Krispy Kreme accross the street. Link to Cal's below for directions.
