Pepe Giallo to Go

Pan | May 9, 2001 01:37 AM

I went to see an art show at a gallery on 25 St. between 11th and 10th today. I noticed Pepe Giallo on 10th Av. between 24th and 25th. Since the Pepe chain has gotten good writeups on this board, I decided to go there for a change and skip Grand Sichuan, especially as getting a panino to go would save me time. Well, I'm here to tell you that they make genuine Italian panini. The thing that's so great about panini in Italy is the wonderful, fresh ingredients that are typically used. Pepe Giallo used a great piece of bread (whole wheat, it seemed to me), excellent tomatoes, fresh mozarella, nice basil, and some delicious arugula to boot. I don't even like arugula much of the time, but I liked this arugula, which was so fresh and high-quality that its innate bitterness didn't override the interesting and complex aftertaste that the very best arugula gives off. If you're in the area, go. I will surely be back for a sit-down meal one of these days.
